WHO WE ARE
Back in the heat of Australia in 1995, the desire to wear natural, cool clothing marked the start of our story.
John joined the Braintree team in the mid-nineties to work with David, his business mentor and an old friend. The first Thoughtful Clothing they created was simple – a capsule collection of men’s shirts and beachwear made of ramie and hemp. Their way of doing business sustainably was refreshing, as were their honest, down to earth personalities. The growth of the business happened naturally. Fitting, for a fledgling sustainable brand.
In 2002 John moved Braintree Clothing to the UK, armed with 500 men’s garments ready to sell. He first opened pop-up shops on London's famous Portobello Road and at Camden Lock market. With countless phone calls and a lot of hard work, a flurry of new independent boutiques soon stocked the ever-expanding Thoughtful Clothing collection. And the business continued to go from strength to strength.
By 2005 we had our first website and soon after, our very own office and warehouse. Three years later, our womenswear collection had really started to develop – with the help of Rachel, who today is our Creative Director.
Rachel grew up near Sydney’s beaches and has always been filled with a sense of wanderlust – and a tenacious desire to work in the fashion industry.
Her first experience was with a small Australian fashion brand. She packed orders, ran up and down stairs, dealt with crazy couriers – anything and everything she could to learn what it took to be part of a happy, successful business.
Her early experiences not only gave Rachel the exposure she craved, but also introduced her people in the industry - one of whom was John. They began to work together in 2003 and after deciding to join John and Braintree in London in 2008, Rachel began to develop our Thoughtful Clothing collections further, expanding them and pushing their creative edge.
Now, Rachel heads up the group of incredible people that we're proud to call our design team. Collectively, they share the same vision: that fashion and sustainability can co-exist in a modern way. And each season, the team craft thoughtful, contemporary pieces for men and women that are not only effortless to wear and sustainable made, but also designed to love-forever classics.
Today you'll find our clothing in more than 500 shops all over the world.
Our whole team takes great pride in doing business openly; being honest and down to earth – the very same approach John has had since day one.
We're proud of who we are, what we do and how we do it. As ever, the right ingredients in equal doses – hard work, determination and luck have helped us develop and improve our business, as a brand and as industry innovators.
We are still a small business with around 20 of us working at our offices in North London. We all work together as a team to help build and grow what we think is a very exciting future.
