At Tradlands, our intention is to make the best clothing for our customer, the woman who drifts towards the men’s section and thinks, "I wish they made this for me." We create menswear inspired staples for women with a relentless emphasis on fit, details, and quality. All of our products are guaranteed to last and made to be lived in. We design clothing that a mother can pass down to her daughter … or that her daughter will borrow from her closet. For the world traveler or the green thumb or girl-about-town, we empower our customers with products that are both classic and comfortable. We are committed to designing and constructing items you love today and value for years to come.
Each style is sewn in small batches in the United States. By keeping production stateside, we can ensure well-crafted details and a healthy, happy work environment for our sewers. Our designs are influenced by the Americana tradition. We see our customer wearing a button-down to sail off the coast of Maine, trek to Yosemite Falls, or join friends for a beer in Hayes Valley, San Francisco. She's a tomboy at heart - but there is a confident and ease that makes it decidedly feminine. Inspired by him, designed just for her.
Tradlands was created in 2012 by us, partners Sadie and Jeremy. Sadie lived in Rhode Island and Jeremy in Iowa before meeting in San Francisco. In early 2012 we decided to start a women’s clothing brand. Our story was really inspired by what wasn’t there. Time and time again, Sadie wanted the styles and textiles seen in menswear and decided to take matters into her own hands.
At the time we were both working full time jobs in downtown San Francisco. We would meet up after work to go over production details, website updates, and photoshoot ideas until it was time to sleep and start all over again. After a year of development and fine-tuning our voice, we launched Tradlands, Volume One, in February 2013. During the first five months of business our reach and audience quickly grew. We continued to work our day jobs. It was impossible to pay the rent on the income of a small start-up so we worked desk jobs during the day and saved our passion project for nights and weekends. One of the great things about entrepreneurship and having a business that mostly lives online is that we can pack up and work from anywhere in the world. And that’s exactly what we wanted to do. By July 1st of 2013 we hit the road on our way to Maine. We took our carefully stowed Tradlands inventory, camping supplies, our dogs, and a few essentials.
In Nevada we camped where the nighttime temperatures were over 70 degrees and continued through gorgeous southeast Idaho. We took in the Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, and the Badlands. Eventually our travels found us in Clinton, Iowa - Jeremy’s hometown - where we stayed with Jeremy’s family for a few weeks and worked on our second production run. Continuing East, we drove by the Great Lakes and Niagara Falls, through the Adirondacks and Vermont’s green mountains.
We arrived in Maine and in the following weeks our Volume Two collection was finished. Our second collection launched on September 2nd and we were married in our family’s backyard on September 14th. We have since moved every year to a new destination while traveling to oversee our production. We carry with us a love and respect for the Americana tradition, from the golden coast of California to the Eastern seaboard. Aside from cultivating a passion for business, Tradlands allows us to create a life that we love everyday.
