1941 – THE BEGINNING
Gardenia Shoe A/S was founded in 1941 in Denmark by Herman Gutkin. He started out as a producer of clogs with modest production facilities.
During the 1950’ the production of clogs stopped, and Herman changed the company’s focus towards fashionable footwear for women.
The shoes of Gardenia enjoyed much success, and the company was now able to move the production to a three stories factory building in the heart of Copenhagen. At this point, the company employed around 100 employees.
CREATING WOMEN’S SHOE FASHION
In the 1960’s, Gardenia secured its position as one of the most successful shoe brands in Denmark. Gardenia was one of the first shoe companies in Denmark to design the pointed shoe with stiletto heel, becoming a pioneer with this new shoe fashion. Gardenia also became a supplier to the Royal Danish Court, delivering shoes for Princess anne Marie’s Confirmation. During this decade Ib Gutkin, the son of Herman Gutkin was introduced to the company.
