From the Ecole des Beaux Arts to jewellery design was only one step, right on to a beach at Saint-Tropez, where André Gas decided to sell his first pieces.
With hands that just dreamt of visualising, forty years ago he created his first lucky charm jewels … and success was already on its way.
An insatiable traveller, he loves every culture and it is from his travels around the world, where he captures every small detail, that he draws his inspiration. He is fascinated by Cartagena because of its force, Mexico dazzles him with the brilliance of its colours, and he is entirely under the spell of New York because of its energy. The spirit of Babel is apparent right through the creative process. From India, he imported a way of cutting metal and created extravagant pieces in filigree. Always an anti-conformist, he adds a patina to black metal to make it look smooth. As a colourist at heart, this designer-sans-frontiere dares to use any combination; his jewellery resembles him, as a mix of artistic folly and precise craftsmanship.
André Gas is a phenomenon, and his brand is in a class of its own. Gas Bijoux has a closer affinity to fine jewellery than costume jewellery, but has really created a new category, that of Fine Costume Jewellery.
