Monkee Genes was born in 2006 out of the frustration of the denim market, to offer something fresh vibrant and youthful. Disillusioned with Primark and other disposable high street fashion, the Monkee Genes team decided to raise public consciousness.
Innovative fits and styles in top of the range fabrics, classic denim with a retro twist and luscious sateen cottons in pop art inspired colours.
In today's fragile environment Monkee Genes is the independant label to watch: on trend, affordable and with an eco and ethical conscience.
Fast forward to 2015 and Monkee Genes is gearing up to embark on a whole new adventure. We are about to morph into 'Stop Taking the Pennies': a trading charity that will continue to sell high quality affordable eco clothing but we will also have an extra string to our bow.
As of September 2015 we will have our new collection both online and in stores. For each piece of this range that is sold we will contribute 50 cents to a foundation local to our manufacturing partner that provides education for the areas children. The rest of Stop Taking the Pennies profits will go towards raising awareness on the true cost of fast fashion and the thirst for ever cheaper clothing. This will be done via a variety of methods, including educational trips, workshops, lectures, talks and road shows. The more people we can get to realise how a cheap pair of jeans comes to the shops for such a little RRP the better.
This change is direction is something Phil Wildbore, MD of Monkee Genes, always wanted to do, but he was spurred into action after the devastating tragedy at the Rana Plaza factory in Bangladesh, 2013.
